The Australian saltwater crocodile, also known as the “salty” or “saltie,” is the largest living reptile on Earth and a true apex predator.
The Biggest Croc Ever Recorded
When it comes to the biggest crocodile ever killed in Australia, one name stands out: “Lolong.” However, it’s important to note that Lolong was not from Australia. He was a saltwater crocodile captured in the Philippines in 2011 and is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest crocodile in captivity.
Lolong measured a staggering 20 feet and 3 inches (6.17 meters) in length and weighed approximately 2,370 pounds (1,075 kilograms). It took a team of over 100 people and several pieces of heavy machinery to capture this massive reptile, which had become notorious for attacking and devouring humans and livestock.
Australia’s Largest Crocodile
While Lolong remains unbeaten in terms of the biggest crocodile ever captured, Australia has its own fair share of colossal crocodiles. One such croc is known as “Krys the Savannah King.” Although no official measurements have been recorded for Krys, he is estimated to be over 18 feet (5.5 meters) long. This enormous reptile was killed in Australia’s Northern Territory in 1957.
Another notable crocodile is “Sweetheart,” a 17.9-foot (5.46-meter) saltwater crocodile that was notorious for attacking boats in the 1970s. Despite his impressive size, Sweetheart was not killed by hunters but died in an accident while being transported to a wildlife park for study.
